National TV Turn Off Week is scheduled for April 21-27. Do you plan on participating? Why or why not? How much TV does your family watch? What things would you do together if there were not TV for a week? Let's open this hot topic up for discussion.

Everything in moderation

We already put limits on what and how much TV our kids can watch, with exceptions (sporting events), so we don't need to shut the TV off for a week to prove the point that TV should be viewed in moderation. Plus, as someone noted earlier, how would we catch the Sox games if we turned off the TV for the week? After dark, we cannot receive a clear signal from the radio station that carries the games for some reason, so without TV there'd be no baseball. And that, my friends, just could not stand.

That would be tough

We use TV as a way to make our 3 year old sit still for an asthma treatment. Puzzles and cars don't make him sit still enough to keep his nebulizer upright, and we can't hear his questions over the machine while we're reading to him, so TV works just fine. That being said, we usually have it off the rest of the day, unless there are sports playoffs involved.

Could your family survive without TV?

I suppose the one thing we'd really miss is the Red Sox games and it might be fun to try listening on the radio. I'm sure it would force other family activities such as board games and crafts which my kids love. I'm sure we would survive...the question is how well.

It was the longest week of our lives ...

... but we got through it. We played a lot of board games and listened to music, and we just sat together and talked about our hopes and dreams. OK, we didn't really talk, but that part about the board games and music was true.

We've done it

We participated in last year's TV Turn Off Week and plan to do it again this year. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. It basically helped us jump start better habits and it's time for a reminder.

No way

My family loves TV. Where would we be without Lost? Heroes? We don't watch it 24/7, but it's a family activity we enjoy.

Can't Live Without It!

After a busy day of work, school, daycare, after school programs, sports and homework, it's our reward!
