Making Summertime Memories
By Gina Pangione
Whether you’re frolicking at the beach, traveling across two states to the grandparents, or simply exploring your own backyard, be sure to create a bunch of lasting summertime memories this August with family and friends.
Keepsake Journal Supplies: Construction paper Crayons and/or markers Hole punch and binder clips Scissors
- Choose a size for your journal, and then assemble some pages—use whole sheets of multi-colored construction paper, or fold them in half, or cut in quarters for pocketsize.
- Punch some holes along one side and bind with clips.
- Children can draw and color scenes depicting cherished summertime memories. Older kids might add in some written captions or description.
- Decorate, and add pages as needed.
Mini-Putt
Half the fun is playing the game, but the other half is building the miniature golf course! Compete with others or best yourself; putt a challenge over and over on the same run, or change it up every time. Kids can tee up outside in the greens of their home-made “Backyard Open.” Or, they can construct an indoor arena on a rainy day, putting a soft ball of any size with a sponge taped to a yardstick. Sinking a hole-in-one in a coffee can is always exhilarating at any age!
Seashell Mementoes Supplies: Seashells (any size, shape or color) String (elasticized or not) Paint or markers
Kick up some shells in the sand and sea, gather them in a big sand pail, slick on some paint or leave them natural, and string them through tiny weathered holes. Create bracelets and neck chains, and then exchange them as enduring friendship trinkets or wear them back to school as a token of a summer well spent!
