Easy recipes & crafts for some family fun!

Doughy creations

Whip up a batch of baking clay with ingredients found in every cupboard. Make sure there’s an adult to supervise the baking process, but let the kids get their hands dirty mixing and painting their doughy creations.   Baking Clay   2 cups flour 1 cup salt 1 cup cold water 2 tbsp. cooking oil   Mix and knead all the ingredients in a large bowl for about two minutes. Have children mold the clay.   To bake: Place on a foil-covered cookie sheet. Prick larger areas with a fork to speed up baking time. Bake at 300ºF for about one hour. Cool and paint.   Preserve by spraying with clear varnish, with adult supervision, of course.

Coffee filter butterflies

Let kids paint colorful wings with watercolor paints and hang around the house, or stick a magnetic strip on the back and hang on the refrigerator for a cheery paper holder.

You’ll need:

Round coffee filters (one per butterfly)

Black acrylic paint or markers

Watercolor paints or colored markers

Black pipe cleaner (one per butterfly)

Paint or color clothespin black. Fold the pipe cleaners into “V” shapes the size you want your antenna to be. Cut and glue the clothespins at the flat end.

Spray the coffee filters with warm water until they lay flat but aren’t drenched. Dab the watercolors or markers on the wet coffee filters. The colors will smear and run, but that’s OK. This will create a pretty effect.

Once the filters are dry, gather in the middle and clip with the coffee filter. Spread out the wings, and you have a beautiful butterfly.
