How I spent my February Vacation

Filed under: Uncategorized — Heather Kempskie @ 3:56 am

By Heather Kempskie

Saturday, Feb. 14: Valentine’s Day

Exchanged small tokens of love with family at breakfast. Received a super-sized Wizard of Oz card from 6-year-old son.

Headed to car dealership to finalize purchase of new sedan. Yipee!

Treated kids to one and ONLY vacation fun by going to FunWorld in Nashua, NH.

Sunday, Feb. 15:

Went to church.

In line at D & D, noticed daughter felt warm.

Canceled date night.

Monday, Feb. 16:

First trip to the pediatrician’s office. Daughter diagnosed with ear infection and UTI and bad cold. Pay $96 for antibiotic that she is not allergic to. Spend 2 hours persuading her to take it.

Tuesday, Feb. 17:

Send son to day camp at our local Y. Keep daughter home with me. Husband takes second shift so I can be on-site for my paper’s monthly deadline.

Major cold begins to settle on me.

Promised son to have a “sleepover” with him. We eat popcorn, watch a movie and camp out on his floor.

Wednesday, Feb. 18:

Wake up at 5 a.m. to the words, “Mom, I just threw up.” My son is now sick.

Cancel Y camp.

Daughter complains that “peeing” really hurts. Make follow up appointment for later in the day.

Finish paper deadline from home.

Snow starts.

Husband arrives home with new car. Very happy guy.

I leave in the new car to take daughter to the pediatrician.

On way home, crash the new car into a pole thanks to snow.

Police, ambulance and husband arrive on scene. I contemplate checking into the hospital just to get a break.

Thursday, Feb. 19:

New car is towed back to the dealership. Husband now in rental car.

Mom comes over to watch the kids. Head to work.

Leave work at noon because of my high fever. Must complete layout of the March issue from home.

Go to my doctor’s and asked to be fixed. Diagnosed with sinus infection and virus.

Beg husband to come home.

Grandmother, grandfather and nephews also become sick. Sorry…again.

In bed for rest of day.

Friday, Feb. 20:

Husband stays home from work because I’m still delirious.

Son asks “Mom, when are you ever going to change your clothes?” Daughter follows with “Mommy, when are you ever going to stand up?”

Daughter throws up around 9 p.m.

Sick time for mom is now over.

Saturday, Feb. 21:

Movies all day at the Kempskie house.

Daughter complains of severe stomach pain.

Up every two hours with her through the night.

Sunday, Feb. 22:

First ones at the pediatrician office to re-check daughter.

Send husband and son to boat show so they can at least have some “fun” during Feb. vacation.

Do 8,000 loads of laundry and respond to every demand for “More water.” “Hold me, Mommy.”

Daughter’s ear infection, UTI and cold are gone. Now wondering why she has stomach pain.

Must take stool sample. She watches Madagascar 2 while I tie dishcloth over my face to get sample.

Deliver sample to Norwood Hospital.

Monday, Feb. 23

Awaiting stool sample results.

Praying for a return to normal.

The Magic of Disney: Some final advice

Filed under: Uncategorized — Heather Kempskie @ 11:31 am

Well, hopefully, our Disney vacation will be much better than our February one. As I write this, I’m coming out of a fever-induced coma. I was able to stay healthy for the first part of the week as I nursed both kids back to life and then…I crashed.

Now, you’ll understand why I asked Jodi of the Walt Disney World Moms Panel the following question on getting sick while on vaca.  Read my past blogs for advice on all things Disney. Jodi will also be featured on an upcoming WL Parents v-cast. Stay tuned.

The Magic of Disney: Staying on Site and Epcot

Filed under: Disney Planning, Uncategorized — Tags: , — Heather Kempskie @ 3:17 pm
OK, my latest progress with our Disney trip was coordinating all of our visitors. Not only will some old friends of ours join us for a day, but my parents may fly down for a night or two and my husband’s 91-year-old grandmother who lives in Florida during the winters may spend a night with us too.
The more the merrier…I hope. I tend to get frantic about vacation planning. I’m trying to repeat a positive mantra in my mind….”Disney is meant to be fun, not stressful.” Repeat when necessary.

To have a baby or to not: How much of that depends on the economy?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Heather Kempskie @ 10:42 am

First- I’m not having another baby. Not because of the economy but because of my goal in keeping my sanity!

That being said, historically speaking, the nation’s birthrate tends to dive during tough economic times. We’re in it right now.

There was a great article on this very topic in the Milford Daily News recently. In it reporter Michael Morton writes:

When a 46-year-old patient recently canceled a vasectomy reversal, a curious Dr. B.G. Parulkar of Marlborough Hospital asked him why.

The man’s reason? Second thoughts after taking into account both his job status in a plunging economy and the cost of adding another mouth to feed.

“Do I really need to have one more kid in this economy?” said Parulkar, a urologist, summarizing the decision.

Before the age of 2, a child can cost at least $7,800 a year, based on a U.S. Department of Agriculture study adjusted for inflation. While Parulkar’s case is just one example of a family planning decision, it could foreshadow the re-emergence of a historical trend: Lower birth rates during times of economic distress.

What about you? Does the economy play a part in your decision to have another child?

How to Save Your Newspaper

Filed under: News to go, Uncategorized — Tags: , — Heather Kempskie @ 5:33 am

When the latest issue of TIME magazine arrived in my mailbox, I had to tear it open to page 31.There in the headline was the answer to my most pressing question “How to Save Your Newspaper.”

As a magazine editor, I’m all too familiar with the challenges facing print journalism. More and more people are choosing to get their news online…for free…leaving print media heavily dependent on ad revenues as their only source for profit. Why will people pay for news via a subscription or newsstand sales when they can simply go online for free content?

Blowing Kisses, Running Laps: The many ways parents love

Filed under: P&K Issue, Uncategorized — Heather Kempskie @ 2:25 pm

I’m a lucky one. My son still wants a kiss at the bus stop. I manage to cross the street and position us right next to the bus door, then I discreetly peck his cheek before he climbs the steps. If he had it his way he’d kiss me in full view of the entire bus. This re-positioning is my way of protecting him (and not give those other kids a reason to tease him).

Our goodbyes don’t stop there. As soon as he finds a seat by the window he peers over the top. I can barely see the rims of his glasses but every day, without question, he waves and blows me a kiss. I catch it in my hand and press against my cheek and watch his sweet smile drift from my sight.

I know this won’t last forever. I know it. He won’t kiss me when he’s 13. But one thing that won’t change and you know what that is – I’ll love that kid forever.

In my work, I’m often privileged to meet people who inspire me as a parent – especially those, who despite immense challenges, are deeply devoted to their children. Like Scott and Doreen Kelly of Foxboro. Their 11-year-old son Kevin has autism and is participating in a sports class at the Hockomock YMCA in Foxboro. His movements are sometimes jerky and I’m sure he’s anxious about the attention our cameras and questions bring. He lets his parents answer.

“We’re really enjoying this,” said Scott, as he smiled at Kevin. “We get to work as a team and soon we’ll be competing in a race when we have to run two miles. It’s been nice training as a family.”

Kevin’s parents are literally by his side – on the bikes, in the pool and on the track. That’s the idea behind the integration program at the Y. Allowing typically developing peers and/or family members to team up with children with special needs and together benefit from youth sports participation.

The story idea struck me when I was reading a national report that there are not enough sport opportunities for children with special needs. I’m happy to report that we’re bucking that trend locally as P&K Special Needs liason Wendy Bulawa reports in our cover story on youth sports.

Quite notably, it was a parent who inspired this Y program to begin with. No doubt, she was driven by love and a desire to help her child be strong, healthy and involved.

Here’s to all the parents who love deeply - Happy Valentine’s Day!

The Magic of Disney: Parking and Best times to visit

Filed under: Disney Planning — Tags: , — Heather Kempskie @ 8:37 am
One month closer to our Disney trip.
Thanks to the fabulous hold-handing that local mom and Disney expert Jodi of the Walt Disney World Moms Panel has been giving me - I’m feeling less panicked and more excited. Read my past blogs for advice on all things Disney.
Last week, Jodi suggested setting a budget for souvenir shopping at Disney. Great idea - not only does it get them psyched for the trip but it forces us to save a little cash for other expenses. Here’s my daughter next to her Cinderella-themed savings jar. We put up some erasable boards with tasks - every time they complete them in the course of the week, a cute little smiley-face goes up. On Saturday, up to $5 is given as a reward and put in the jar. Grandparents have been sneaking a little into the jars too!
Here’s this week’s installment on Disney planning - advice on rides, parking and more!
