Uncle Sam’s long wait

Uncle Sam was created during the War of 1812 but wasn’t adopted as a national symbol until Sept. 15, 1961.

Bald eagle vs. turkey

Most of us know that Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird, but who overrode his vote? It was John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, who picked the bald eagle.

What do you call it?

Nicknames for the U.S. flag include the Stars and Stripes, Old Glory and The Star-Spangled Banner

Former P&K Cover Girl Shares Paper’s History

Filed under: P&K Issue — Heather Kempskie @ 9:36 am

A few weeks ago, I was invited to attend a presentation by Madison Lorenzen, a sixth grade student in Medway, on Parents and Kids magazine.

Madison, herself, has a long history with P&K. Her first cover appearance was when she was only 2-year-old (see the video) Her mom (publisher of P&K) said she was holding a cupcake because it was her 2nd birthday…and it was the only way to keep her toddler smiling.

Flash forward 10 years and we invited Madison to be a part of our 10th anniversary spread with other former P&K models.

Her presentation was excellent - her teacher agreed giving her a perfect score. I’ve already asked her to work at P&K when she graduates in another decade or so. Congratulations, Madison and thanks for being an ambassador for P&K!

My husband is the sushi maker in our house. He spends hours and hours in the kitchen using his Make Your Own Sushi kit. I wanted to learn to and took the easier road. Danielle and I headed to  Whole Foods in Bellingham and took Sushi making for beginners. They offer the weekday evening class about every other month.

Thanks to the patience of our sushi chefs, Joe and Mini, all 12 attendees successfully rolled cucumber rolls, california rolls and even a shrimp one. The one-hour class cost $20 and - this is the BEST part - we left with at least $50 of sushi.

Back to the ER

Filed under: Family Life — Heather Kempskie @ 7:38 am

Yup. Same ER. Different ailment. Same result: More gray hair and aging process going at turbo speed for this mama.

brookeeyeMy 4-year-old daughter was victim of  an unfortunate accident at our local pet shop. She was checking out some doggie toys when she leaned down and one of the steal poles that holds merchandise poked her straight in the eye.

She, of course, was screaming and a little blood was coming out of her eye, which was clenched shut. We left the store, I called my pediatrician and was told to head straight to the closest ER.
