Back to the ER

Filed under: Family Life — Heather Kempskie @ 7:38 am

Yup. Same ER. Different ailment. Same result: More gray hair and aging process going at turbo speed for this mama.

brookeeyeMy 4-year-old daughter was victim of  an unfortunate accident at our local pet shop. She was checking out some doggie toys when she leaned down and one of the steal poles that holds merchandise poked her straight in the eye.

She, of course, was screaming and a little blood was coming out of her eye, which was clenched shut. We left the store, I called my pediatrician and was told to head straight to the closest ER.

During the 8-minute drive to the hospital, I really thought my daughter would loose sight in her right eye. Just like that. In an innocent moment, it could be gone. I wasn’t able to get a good look at her eye because she absolutely wouldn’t allow me to.  She was also screaming that she wanted to “go right home!’

culpritShe knew that wasn’t going to happen when we pulled into the hospital parking lot - at which point - my 4-year-old nephew who was also with us asked “Auntie, will she have to get a shot in the eye?”

Near hysterics in the back seat.

On the bright side, we were out of there within a half-hour. The pole missed her pupil by just enough. She may need Motrin for discomfort but her eye will be healed soon.

Now, she kind of likes it. I’m guessing that’s because her older brother told her she looked “spooky.”

Lesson here: Be careful of those poles!

  1. Heather,

What an awful story! Is she still in pain? Does she have an eye patch? If she does, maybe you and Lisa could come up with any all-siblings’ craft project to bejewel eye patches for her, so she could have a different one for each day, to match her outfit.

  2. Oh my gosh!! I would have lost my mind. I’m thoroughly impressed with your ability to ‘maintain calm and composure’ in the heat of crisis and panic to get kids to the ER!! Amazing. Glad your little gal will be AOK after some lovely pain meds and some well-deserved time ’scaring’ her brother with her spooky eye! :)
