About P&K
After 10 years of offering smart parenting advice to the suburbs of greater Boston, we’re changing our look and making a few promises to our readers.
Our coverage is real. We recognize that families come in all shapes and sizes, that parenting is a tough job that shouldn’t require perfectionism but rather a strong grasp of reality. Our coverage will make you happy. We want to inspire you and empower you with local news that affects your family. And finally, we promise to bring you unique ideas on bringing your family together including our extensive monthly calendar of local events.
Our award-winning publication is available free in more than 60 communities.
Submitting story ideas- All story ideas should be sent to Heather Kempskie. Please include general description, list of possible sources and sidebar ideas. About half of stories found in are publication are assigned and the other half result from story pitches.
- Use the editorial calendar as a general guideline but keep in mind that only one to two stories per issue will focus on the editorial theme. In every issue, P&K aims to present editorial that pertains to parents of newborns through preteens.
- Stories that are local (local tie, impact, sources, etc) are preferred. Think trend, current news, hip, intelligent. Think profiles that appeal to emotions and shared parenting experiences.
- There are a limited number of large features per month. Please consider submitting ideas for shorter pieces (400 words) for a rate of $25 - $75.
- Allow two weeks for response. If an idea is not accepted, please don’t be discouraged. There is only so much space available every month.
- Below is a general timeline for article submissions. Please know that last-minute timely topics may be assigned closer to publication date.
General submission calendar:
· Parents and Kids buys first-time rights, which revert to the author seven days after publication. Please know, all stories are also published on our Web site
· A signed contract must be submitted before any work is assigned.
· Fees are based on article complexity but typically range from $50 to $125. Article rates should be established prior to official assignment
· Parents and Kids pay upon publication.
· Parents and Kids kill policy is 50 percent to 100 percent of set fee.
Parents and Kids cannot guarantee exactly when a piece will be published. Contributors must notify Parents and Kids if it will appear in another local publication.
